I spent some time recently with SolarWinds at Network Field Day 9, and I’d also been in contact with them prior to field day looking at NPM 11.5. Many in the networking industry are already familiar with SolarWinds and the type of product they deliver. They have a niche that strikes a nice balance between cost and capability. Their products are useful from an engineers perspective and as a business, they have a passion for what they do. Yes, I’m a fan of SolarWinds. While this post has been sitting in my drafts folder for just a little too long, I still wanted to hit the publish button on it and talk about the features that I like in NPM 11.5. Since SolarWinds is here at Cisco Live, you can stop by their booth and see for yourself.
What’s New in NPM 11.5
I’m only going to mention a few features, and let you view the video for yourself. First up is automated dependency mappings.
Automated Dependency Mappings
Initially digging through the 11.5 documentation I didn’t realize this, but at Network Field Day it was mentioned that NPM does an automated dependency mappings, which means can stitch together graphs. I kinda thought that was cool. If you have a ton of data and can’t bring the data together then your product isn’t worth much to me. I don’t want silos.
Wireless Heat Maps
There were a bunch of other little things here and there that of course add up to a lot of nice new features. My favorite by far was the Wireless Heat Maps. Have you ever tried to figure out wireless coverage? Sure there are a ton of expensive products that can do it. But SolarWinds has a reputation for being reasonably priced and to add that functionality to the other capabilities again brings this sense of having all my information in one place, in a single pane of glass, and not in these various management silos. Again, this is a plus. Hopping from NMS to NMS to figure out an issue just sucks.
Don’t take my word for it. I highly recommend you talk to SolarWinds about a trial if you don’t already use their products, and see for yourself. If you’re attending CiscoLive this week head on over to the World of Solutions and have them show you in their demo network just what they can do for you. And also, take a look at the following video from Network Field Day 9, where I served as a delegate.
The video discusses what’s new in SolarWinds NPM 11.5. As I mentioned, I only mentioned two features here that stood out to me.
And finally, be sure to check out other TechFieldDay events, like the one that’s happening right now at Cisco Live.
